Food Photography Tips

Photographing food can be an interesting task for anyone. If you are doing product photography for food then you want to make sure that whatever item you are taking a picture of looks great. Your customers will be looking at these pictures to help choose what it is that they are going to eat. You may want to hire a food stylist to arrange the food for you so that it looks the best that it can. Getting the perfect picture of your dish can be difficult, but the outcome can be very rewarding.

The first thing that you want to take into consideration is how the food looks on the dish that you have provided. Make sure that nothing is just thrown onto the plate or squished looking. Imagine every picture that you’ve ever seen on a fast food menu. The burgers look big, juicy, fresh, and colorful; even though what is tossed into your bag only slightly resembles what you were looking at. If you have no idea how to arrange the food yourself, then seek the expertise of a food stylist. It’s their job to make sure that everything on the plate looks as good as it tastes.

After arranging the food, you want to consider the lighting on the food. Bright pictures with less shadow look great and compliment the food that you will be presenting to people. Also, try not to use lights that are hot, if you are going to be taking several pictures. Hot lights will make the food start to wither or sweat and this does not look good on camera.

The final thing to take into consideration is color. Even if you are taking a picture of plain white rice you can make the picture appealing and colorful to the eye. Use serving dishes that are brightly colored with reds and yellows. You can also garnish the dish you are photographing to add even more color. Make sure that the background of the picture is colorful as well. People love pictures of food that looks fun and lots of vibrant color looks fun.

With these few tips, you should come up with some great pictures of food. If you aren’t happy with the results then experiment around. Experimentation during photography is a lot of fun and you can come up with some great photos that you didn’t even know that you could take!
