What is the difference between blepharitis and stye? Blepharitis and stye are the two most common eye conditions which causes confusion among professionals especially those who are not health-related. Here are some points to consider when differentiating one from the other.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis is an inflammatory disease process of the eyelids. It is a chronic disease in which there is no cure and it requires long term treatment to keep it under control. It is usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, allergies and lice and may also be due to repeated styes and chalazia. People suffering from this condition experience crusty, reddened, swollen, itching and burning eyelids. Thorough physical examination confirms the diagnosis of this condition. Blepharitis treatment involves meticulous daily cleansing of the eyelids which helps in the removal of skin oils that cause bacterial overgrowth. Antibiotic ointments may also be prescribed by your physician.
Stye
Stye or hordeolum is an acute infection of the secretory glands of the eyelids. The infection is usually the result of blocked glands within the eyelids. When the gland is blocked, the oil produced by the gland would back up forming a lump. The lump could either point externally or internally. It is commonly caused by the staphylococcal bacteria that are found on the skin. A stye is considered to be one of the complications of blepharitis. Therefore, to avoid the occurrence of this condition, it is best that you adhere to the treatment and prevention program that your physician advised you. People with sty would experience redness, tenderness and pain in the affected area. Later, they may also experience swelling, discomfort during blinking of the eye, watering of the eye and sensitivity to light. A physical examination is done to confirm the diagnosis of this condition. Stye treatment includes applying warm compresses four to six times a day, antibiotic and/or steroid ointments, and surgery for worst cases. It is highly advised not to press or squeeze the sty for it can cause further infection.
Blepharitis and styes are diseases which can be prevented with proper hand washing and proper hygiene plus eating the right kind of food and having a regular exercise.
