Stachybotrys, or black mold, is a widespread fungus that tends to flourish in warm and humid environments. The mold is most well-known in that certain species of Stachybotrys can have deleterious health effects on people. Black mold health effects can vary widely, and are therefore often difficult to diagnose.

It is very common that an individual who is suffering from mold exposure believes that he or she has a simpler ailment, such as the flu or a common cold. Some of the symptoms of mold exposure can include: nausea, vomiting, headaches, fatigue, sneezing, or coughing. If these symptoms persist in an individual despite proper treatment for other ailments that could cause them, it could be very worthwhile to examine whether that individual is suffering from exposure to mold.

Prevention: taking steps to prevent mold growth is the best and safest route to avoiding any concern of contracting health issues. As Stachybotrys thrives in warm and humid environments, the easiest method of prevention is to make conditions unsuitable for its growth.

A dehumidifier is the best tool to prevent mold growth. Keeping a dehumidifier set in the range of 40 to 60 percent humidity should be sufficient to ensure that mold cannot grow in the area. It is also worth noting that carpet holds moisture; anyone living in a particularly warm, humid region would be well-advised not to have carpeting in rooms that can accrue moisture, such as basements or bathrooms.

Another tactic is to make certain that areas are well-ventilated; if there is moisture consistently gathering on any surface in the home, create a path for air to flow to that area to prevent the growth of mold. Mold can often be prevented by a method as simple as moving furniture or purchasing a fan. Keeping surfaces clean also helps to prevent mold.

Obviously, if there is already a problem existing in a building, then the goal will be to find a technique to remove black mold. Black mold removal can be a simple process; there are many mold-killing and mold-removal products available for purchase in retail stores.

In many cases, a simple solution of bleach and water (approximately one part bleach to 20 parts water) will do the trick. Stachybotrys can be a very persistent fungus; however, so it is important to clean both thoroughly and regularly, and to take special care to dry any affected areas so that the mold cannot regroup.

Black mold is a distasteful and potentially dangerous foe to the homeowner, but with knowledge and preparation, its growth and effects can be prevented.
