The bedding departments of large stores are filled with the latest “make life easy” product for dressing our beds : bedding ensembles. These are bedding sets which comprise everything you need to put together a well dressed bed usually including items such as sheets, pillow shams, duvet cover, bedding skirt, cushions and throw.

We are buying them up in droves because most of us need the help that a bedding ensemble can provide in putting together an attractive bed. We are not skilled in finding and purchasing many different elements of bedding and creating a pleasing whole.

In the past, if we had the cash, we would have had an interior designer selecting our bedding. But now it has all been done for you and put in one bag with a single price tag – and often for less than a cost of a single consultation with a designer.

The bed in the bag is a great idea on the surface and beds around the nation have certainly taken a turn for the better as a result. But is a bedding ensemble always the answer?

It really depends on the bedding ensemble. Some bedding ensembles simply have too many matching items. They have the same effect as an outfit which has matching handbag, shoes, hat, brooch and scarf. Too much coordination!

However some bedding sets have been very carefully thought out so that they look like they have not been bought in a bag and put onto the bed with no thought. The better bedding ensembles do not have every item matching exactly. They use a variety of fabrics in the same color tomes which simply coordinate with each other. They look as if you might have bought the duvet set in one store and then shopped somewhere else and found a lovely little throw to set off your purchase.

When you are buying an ensemble see if you can hold out for the type which looks like a designer put it together rather than the type which is all one color or fabric then you will have a hit on your hands rather than an over-coordinated miss.
